Howard W. Peak IV

As a teenager in Alamo Heights, Howard Peak (AHHS Class of 1967) began his lifelong devotion to improving San Antonio as a Junior Associate with the San Antonio Conservation Society. As a young man, he taught horseback riding at Ft Sam and served as a volunteer firefighter in Alamo Heights in his 20s.

Howard earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1974 and a master’s in Urban Studies and Environmental Management from UTSA in 1975. Before entering politics, he served in the U.S. Army, worked as a City Planner for San Antonio, helped develop the Sonterra area with Tom Turner, and taught urban administration at Trinity University. Elected to City Council in 1993 and Mayor in 1997, Howard championed major initiatives including the San Antonio River Improvements project, the Edwards Aquifer Protection program, and the city’s first comprehensive water plan. His dedication to parks and trails earned him the 2008 State Trail Advocacy Award, and in 2012 the trail system was renamed the Howard W. Peak Greenway System. After his mayoral tenure, he served as AT&T's Executive Director of External Affairs and remained active on numerous boards and civic projects. Outside of public service, Howard served on the Bel Meade Home Owners Association Architectural Committee and was a devoted Longhorn football fan, lifelong animal lover, classic car enthusiast, longtime motorcycle rider, and avid runner.

Howard passed away on November 30, 2024. His wife, Margie Bratten Peak (AH Class of 1968) accepted the award on his behalf.
